Your website’s homepage is often the first point of contact with potential clients. It’s the first impression, the first handshake. But not every homepage is designed and built in a way to captivate interest and compel visitors to learn more or submit an inquiry.

So what’s makes a successful homepage?

In this post, I’m sharing with you the exact blueprint I use on the websites that I build for my clients that consistently convert and generate leads.

Successful homepages have these 5 elements that are proven to keep people on your website and keep coming back.

First Section: Clarity

When a visitor lands on your website it should be immediately clear who you are and what you do. In the first section on your website (often called the hero section or hero image) should be a combination of your business name and what you do (aka the problems you solve) and a strong call to action to view services, get started, etc.

Second Section: Quick Overview

In the next section write a quick overview of who you are, what you do, the clients you help, and what problems you solve. You can do this by writing website copy that is empathetically driven and benefits lead. This is not a resume or a place to list your accomplishments. It’s a place to introduce your business and the humanity behind it.

Third Section: Services

In this section list the top services you offer. Keep the descriptions short – no more than once sentence. Below place a CTA button that leads to the full-service page.

Fourth Section: Testimonials

Word of mouth marketing goes a long way. Potential clients love to read about other people who have worked with you before and have really enjoyed the experience. They’re more likely to work with you if other’s have done it before and are happy with their results.

Fifth Section: Newsletter

In this section, write a strong value pitch and call to action to sign up for your email newsletter. This is a great place to share your free value offer (pdf download, checklist, etc) in order to keep on your visitor’s radar in the future.

Six Section: Optional Addons

Blog / Resources

If you have a blog that is filled with helpful resources or demonstrates your expertise or knowledge, share a few links to your most popular posts. This helps keep visitors on your website while researching more about what you do.

Take Action

Open a new tab and look at your business’s homepage through this criteria. How does it hold up? Write down the changes you need to make. Then open up your calendar and find time in the next 10 days to update that copy. As always, I’m here to help! I love talking about website strategy.
